This has been a full summer, and we still have the
Wedding Vow Renewal Service coming up at the end of August. Memorial Day
Weekend this congregation celebrated the ministry of Jim Burmeister
among us: 29 years of glorious music. The choir sang Gloria by Vivaldi.
Former members and guests came from far and wide to thank Jim. That
weekend we got to see the depth of Jim’s faith, when his mother, Ruth,
died suddenly. Jim persevered, strengthened by the support of the choir
and congregation.
In June we welcomed 15 new members to Memorial, sisters and brothers in
Christ joining in commitment to worship, fellowship, and service.
June 29 and 30 I rode in the Bishop’s “Century Bike Ride for Lutheran
Campus Ministry.” 100 miles from Milwaukee to Madison, hearkening back
100 years to when Pastor Frick of Milwaukee organized the first Lutheran
campus ministry in the U.S. in Madison. I had to walk up one hill, and I
was always way behind, but I MADE IT. I appreciate greatly the support
of Memorial’s people in this fund-raiser.
This summer we have lost some dear members to death. Some were expected,
some were not. Certainly grief has been part of our life together.
Vacation Bible School was fun this year. VBS was based on Habitat for
Humanity’s “Under Construction” program. We had a guest speaker from
Habitat. We constructed door stoppers in the shape of a house. We
learned new songs, which we sang for residents at Luther Manor as part
of the special Friday activities. We even had a cake in the shape of a
house. Thanks to all the volunteers, especially Trish Kuehnl for
wonderful, dedicated, enthusiastic leadership.
Our confirmation students and parents take responsibility for serving
the de Paul Meal on the first Sunday of August. (The first Sunday of the
month is always Memorial’s day.) Saturday morning we were chopping
onions and celery, and making “jello buckets.” Sunday we journeyed to
the south side to serve 275 guests.
Personally, we were able to get the whole family together for a vacation
along the Pacific coast in Oregon. Beautiful! Plus, we watched our
daughter, Hannah, in action, both in her Americorps program near
Seattle, and contra dancing. And, I am now driving around in a Prius—since
I have to drive, at least it is high mileage and low pollution.
