Tongues of Fire

“Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among [the disciples], and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit…..” Acts 2

The Day of Pentecost, chronicled in the second chapter of Acts, is coming in this church year May 23. Our Eastertide celebration of Christ’s resurrection paves the way into our celebration of the presence of the Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus. The fire hovered over each disciple. Their tongues became on fire – imagine what it would be like to have a completely foreign language coming out of your mouth, telling the Good News to people who need to hear it. Suddenly the words are just there. When you pray for the Spirit to give you the right Gospel words to tell someone who needs to hear the Gospel you might be amazed what comes out of your mouth.

On these May Sunday mornings we will be trying out a different schedule, worship at 8:30 and education at 9:45. Nancy Spindler laid out the council’s reasoning for this “time trial” in the November, 2009 Discovery. The worship survey conducted by the council last summer showed that members’ thoughts and opinions about worship schedule and style covered a whole spectrum, so the council determined to try different schedules to give them some working experience to reflect upon. After we get into the month and have tried it, the council will be eager to hear your thoughts. When you share your thoughts will your tongue be on fire with your own, personal passion, or will your tongue be guided by the Holy Spirit?

When June comes we will move to the usual summer schedule, one service at 9:00.

Most of you reading this will already know that I will be leaving Memorial in early June. It is too busy right now to pause and reflect, but I know that when I get a bit of space I will be amazed at all the
ministry which the Spirit works through this congregation, in which I have been blessed to share. It has been clear to me for a while that the Spirit is prompting me to find a new way to serve the Lord. I do not know what that will be but I am eager to find out. And I will be glad to hear about Memorial flourishing with your next pastor. Always and in all things listen for guidance from the Holy Spirit. Fire up!

To close here is Bill DuBois’ prayer to open the most recent Property Management Committee meeting: Dear Lord, Thank you for this opportunity to serve you. Help and guide us in the decisions we will make. Give us the strength to keep this church you have entrusted to us in working order to your glory. In Christ’s name, AMEN.
